The people of the world dissapoint me often. It happened again Saturday. My wife had been planning a party for weeks. She asked me to cook, and in the invtitation she mentioned that we would have BBQ.

When you hear BBQ, what do you think of? I grew up in Florida, and my dad had a small BBQ catering company on the side just for fun. He did pulled pork, half chickens, ribs...Barbecue. That's what I think of. Delicious meat slow smoked over charcoal for many hours until it's tender enough to melt in your mouth, with flavor that will knock your socks off even without any sauce.

Evidently I'm wrong. Barbecue is hamburgers and hot dogs. Preferably premade patties of questionable quality and hot dogs of questionable ingredients overcooked on a propane grill that looks more like a 60's representation of a robot of the future than a real grill, which should actually have some sort of FIRE in it at some point. If I wanted to cook shitty hamburgers and hot dogs I wouldn't even leave the AC. I'd just cook them in a damn pan.

Anyways, the ribs I smoked all morning were eaten, as was the corn I boiled. But the half chickens I grilled? Not a single one was touched. We ended up with 3 entire chickens. The meat was done perfectly and tasted fantastic. The only piece of chicken that was taken was eaten by someone who didn't eat pork, and she had no clue what to do with the white meat quarter chicken I gave her. She ended up just eating the wing.

Is it really so odd to have grilled bone-in chicken cooked over charcoal? It can't be.

Up here we call hamburgers and hot dogs a cook out. Hell, even proper BBQ is called a cook out in Michigan. But then we also drink pop, not soda

When I hear BBQ, I think piles and piles of slow cooked/smoked meat, grilled corn and baked beans, but mostly meat. Beef, pork, chicken, dog, cat, possum, groundhog, hell... if you can catch it cook it.

Oh good grief. Yeah, I can empathise.

Only it's worse here, by and large - "traditional" Aussie BBQ sucks arse about as much as that abomination to which you refer, Soldier. Possibly more so. Yeah, it's a national disaster.

Luckily, however, that has begun to change over the last however many years. More and more so.

Legit BBQs of the Americas, or at least something in that style, is where it's at.

Send me a charcoal-grilled chook or ten any ol' time.

I just had to tell a friend/coworker that he is definitely not 8% bodyfat. I felt kind of bad about it, but he just isn't. He said his lowest was 5%. I saw the pick and he was 8-10% at the lowest. Good abs, but no vascularity and not really any obliques. He was also lit from above which made his abs pop, but he was nowhere close to 5%. If he was a physique athlete he'd have gotten destroyed in what he considered his best level of conditioning. He's probably around 15% now.
