Smile overhead press

Hey,
My question is which grip works best for pressing overhead??
Is it false or regular??
I have seen many powerlifters and body builders using false grip.
Is false grip save your shoulders and rotator cuff compared to regular grip??
Secondly how to keep abs and butt tight to press big weight??
Can u just show us a proper way to brace abs to create inter abdominal pressure???

IMO, it is really just personal preferance. Very little benefit or drawback either way. I personal OHP using a false grip

No. Which grip you use has little to no bearing on your shoulders or rotator cuff.

False grip can be dangerous, could work for high rep sets but I would not do it on the heaviest sets. I dont know about saving your shoulders by using it..a press is a press.

I use a false grip to keep the pressure off my wrist. Mine have taken a beating over the years. As far as tightness I try to hold air into my stomach. If I am wearing a belt I use my gut to push against it.

I prefer false grip, only reason is just because it's more comfortable for me, we're all built differently.

Any time I'm putting 150lb+ over my dome I'd want to have my thumb firmly wrapped around the bar, but no, it won't make any difference.

As for learning how to brace yourself, just finish your OHP sets by holding the last rep over your head for about 10 seconds. You'll learn real quick how to tighten everything up.

I wear a belt and push my abs against it

Of course my abs are pretty strong form sucking my gut in the 20 years I was 100 lbs overweight...trying to look like I was inly 80 lbs overweight!

I use a regular grip and stick a belt on for my heavy sets, helps stability and its surprisingly easy to put your back out on the press as a friend of mine found out the painful way!

I use a false grip for OHP, but use a regular grip for behind the neck pressing. The bar path just seems more natural. Im sure to chalk up when using false grip though. Dropped like 250 on my ribs sometime last year benching, and its made me cautious. haha

As for keeping tight. I use the valsalva maneuver for abs and just flex my ass hard.

Like someone else said squeeze your ass and pull your hips under. Creates a better base and tightens the abs.

I use a regular grip. False grip scares the hell outta me lol
