Default Brute's LibertyFest2013 SM Write Up

Overall results: 2nd Place. we had about 15 competitors, but only 6 heavy weights.

It was a classic southern Illinois hot and sticky august day. the contest started at 3 PM as a part of LiberyFest. The Little Chapel Church puts on a big event every Labor Day weekend, open and free to the public. This includes a classic car show, carnival rides, face painting, games, and huge amounts of food. All free to anyone who stops by. I did my part to take people's minds of rough economic times by putting on a strength show with some of my fellow athletes.

Several things set this contest apart. First, it was free to competitors. Granted its only for bragging rights, but that was nice. People often ask me why I would risk major injury competing for a piece of plastic. I don't compete for the trophy, I compete for myself and for pride. Second, pressing was the third event instead of the first. They had Shane Hopkins in to do an exhibition bench during the contest intermission so they didn't want to wear him out first. And 3rd, it was LIGHT! This contest is open to the public and in previous years competitors hadn't been able to budge the weights. (Like me, first year I couldn't get the axle to my shoulders)

This was an outstanding contest though and the people involved were amazing. I was coming of a twisted knee and taking things slow and technical, but even if I had been at my best I still would have taken 2nd. Shane also competed, and the man was just flat out stronger than me. He also benched 605, so that was damn impressive.

Farmers walk: 200 pounds per hand for 60 feet in 12 seconds.
This is 50-100 pounds per hand less than the standard contests for heavy weights. Only 2 or 3 competitors made it across the finish line. Most you could visibly see shaking and trembling just picking up the implements, and they would quickly begin to stumble and fall over themselves. For the crowd and my own ego, I did some shrugs at the end with the implements.

Yoke Walk: 500 pounds for 60 feet in 15.6 seconds
This nearly killed me two years ago. This time it was comfortable and I felt like I could have carried the weight in front of my on my shoulders if I had wanted. Similar to the farmers, people shook under the strain, the yoke would sway back and forth on them, and most could only take it a few steps before having to set it down and reset. The heart of these competitors was amazing though, many would not give up until after their time was up on the clock.

Bench Press Break
Shane benched 605 on a crappy bench.

Axle Clean and Press: 160 pounds 8 reps in 60 seconds
They made a new rule on this 2 minutes before the event began because of me. I walked up to it and snatched it. They said it had to be cleaned, then pressed, which is not normal in strongman. They also didn't enforce lockouts, which put me at a disadvantage as I automatically wait for a down command before dropping an implement.

My conditioning bit me in the ass here. The weight was stupid light, but I just got tired after 6 reps and the last two were very slow. I did my best to coach other lifters through the event as many had never used a thick bar and had a lot of trouble holding onto it.

Tire Flip: 600 pound tire for 60 feet in 40 seconds
I have a few opinions about this but judging is judging and my griping wouldn't change my position in the standings, so I'll let it go. We'll just say that some competitors didn't have to go the full 60 feet due to the starting position, and some had to go closer to 65.

This was another showcase of needing to get faster, but overall I felt pretty good and shaved about a minute off of my time from the last contest. Watching the video, I can see a few things I could change and improve on, and will be working on those. Tire flips are good cardio.

Video here.

Farmers walk looked strong. Domination. Yoke walk, looked the same. Clean and press, though both parts looked solid, your presses looked crazy easy. Tire flips - nothing but pure power and determination.

Huge performance. No weak spots. It's all gravy from here.

Made that look EASY! Well done.

All upper body on those cleans too. You get some hip and dip on those and you'll be cleaning 300 one of these days!
