Default Why Equipped Powerlifting?

I have been asked this a few times in a few different forms, so I figure I would explain why I decided to be an equipped lifter.

For me it was the want to lift against the strongest I could find. I also wanted to lift the most I could possibly do. The big difference in raw and equipped powerlifting is the need for a training crew. There are very few equipped powerlifters who train alone, its just too much. After my pec tear, there is no real going back to heavy raw benching for me. I accomplished my goal and can bench 405 raw for a few reps. That will probably be as heavy as I ever go again raw. Its not worth the $$$ and the pain I had to go through. Equipped lifting has helped me continue to lift even after an injury that would end most people.

Now to smash a big misconception. I can only speak for myself, but I got stronger raw in my gear. I rarely if ever trained my raw squat over 405lbs. I did 4 or 5 workouts never going over 650. Tried to squat heavy raw on a limb after I had a talk with Rippetoe. He like lots of other people out there think guys who squat 1k in gear cant squat 600 raw.



Keep in mind that 805 would be a top 20 all time raw squat in my weight class. That 770 wasn't an issue at all. A good training cycle and I think I could hit a nice raw #.

My best geared squat in a meet is 1010. It would take 1080+ to break into the top 20 all time geared squats. I am a long way from 1080!

Hopefully I can qualify to lift at the Arnold this year. Afterwards I will set my plans to hit a raw meet to at least squat and deadlift.


With that said, I really think raw lifting is more likely to be what grows the sport of powerlifting. You will never see me knock raw lifting (unless I am joking with BigMan or BTB), because at the end of the day I think its great as well.

Equipped lifting is not for everyone. In fact its not for most people. I hate to see people get into gear who are not "strong" yet. Hit some nice #s raw then if its something you want to play with, cross that bridge.

serious question here. could you explain how one actually gets stronger in gear. like i understand what happens when you are raw but im kinda confused on how geared lifters get stronger

Not sure your question. As in how do I get stronger in gear, or how did my raw squat improve?

how do you get stronger in gear. because to me it seems the gear has a limit to how much it can give you so if you are training in it all the time how does one get stronger in it.

I think I understand what your asking, but if Im way off just tell me.

I actually train in limited gear. Most of the time just briefs and knee wraps. I add in my suit randomly. It made my raw stuff move (this is an assumption) basically on the whole overload principle.

But basically the answer to your question is the same way you do raw. I do heavy weights for as many reps as I can, and progress each week.
