Default A Couple of Questions

First question/issue: I've used my belt deadlifting three times in my last 4 deadlift workouts, and two of those times(including tonight) it was like my belt was just in the way. As in, it wasn't helping me out, but keeping me from getting in proper position and actually causing unnecessary stress I usually don't have in my lower back. I've never had this issue before until recently. I'm wearing my belt in the same position as I always have. The only difference is that I'm putting it an extra hole out since my waist must be getting slightly bigger. Does anyone have any experience with this issue and what may be causing it? Just to add, I typically feel more powerful with my belt on, but tonight, I was more powerful with it off. It was doing more harm than good. Like I said, it was just "in the way", and it was keeping me from getting in a proper set up.

Second: Over the past few weeks, I've noticed my muscles have been unusually tight. My biceps, shoulders, and hips primarily. (Which this may have to do with why the belt is causing issues. I don't know.) No, I do not do mobility work very regularly anymore. I haven't in a little over a year. I just am really clueless as to why though my body is suddenly getting tighter. I haven't changed anything about my daily life. I'm going to try to stretch everything out and see how that works, but I am still at a loss as to why I'm suddenly getting this problem I've never really had. I've had some tight hips before, but I've never had problem getting my depth on squats. This week? Yes. Could it have to do with increased volume and weight on my lifts?

Any help is appreciated.

No changes in form, bar heigh or stance when squatting? Sumo deadlift more then you used to?

Try wearing your belt a little higher. My squat belt position and my deadlift belt position are so far apart that I could actually wear belts in each position at the same time. When I deadlift my belt goes right across the middle of the abs. It feels odd at first, but it gives better support and also stays out of the way at the bottom.

As far as being tighter, are you moving more weight? As I get stronger, I definitely get more aches and pains. It's inevitable when more weight is being moved and supported.

@Strength, I breathe normally during set up, get a breath before I pull, and typically hold it until lock out. The only time I would say I let my breath out before lock out would be a really high rep set and I'm just losing air. I've not had that happen for a while though.

@ED, no changes in my squat. I did a few weeks of sumo deadlifting after my squats until it got to be too much as my deadlift days got heavier. That's it.

@Soldier, I'm definitely moving heavier weights and more volume too. I'll play around with belt position this Friday for my deadlifts if needed.

Thanks for the replies. Sorry it's taken me a few days to get back to them.

I highly recommend a monthly massage if you can at all swing the cost. I'm lucky as mine are covered up to $500.00 per year. It really works a treat to get all the built up knots out.

My experience is that the belt hinders me on deadlifts if it's too tight. I feel more secure using it, though whether it actually does any good is debatable. On squats and overhead press, I wear the belt as tight as possible, but deadlift is quite different.

I've also heard it said that a bigger waist size is a hindrance on deadlifts but a help on squats, and I'd tend to agree with this.

So I'm wondering if the slight increase in waist size you mentioned is responsible for the belt feeling funny and awkward.

What about lifting without it and seeing what that feels like?

As for the tightness - is it actually a problem (apart from squat depth)? Why is tightness a bad thing?

your not going to like this answer, but the added weight is making you out of position not the belt. When you add the belt is when you really notice it. Just my .02

@Squatter, I've thought about it and I might do it. I know a guy who has offered to give me a free massage before.

@Tann, The thing I mean about being tight is that it isn't the "good tightness". It was effecting just about everything.

@Byrd, I want to agree with you, and I want to disagree with you too. I've lifted heavier weights than that and felt completely normal. I've tried lifting lighter weights with the belt and have felt completely off. Although, you know a lot more about lifting than I do...

Unless you mean the added body weight. If so, I can only agree with you.

Back to Tann: my waist hasn't increased dramatically, but it may have something to do with it too.
