Default Tips for first PL meet

Any tips you've got, please share them with me !
Steve will be with me and coaching me, so I know he'll help me a ton! But anything you can think of to practice while training or whatever is appreciated. Could be something I haven't thought of or seen.
Thanks MAB

Practice your commands.

I fucked them up my first meet, my training partner fucked them up his first meet. It's not something you should need to worry about! Just practice them lots before hand.

Common sense stuff like making sure your bag is fully packed and ready to go, make sure you have the food you need, and then some. You might not end up eating any of it, but it's better safe than sorry. Extra clothes, sweat pants, socks, etc.

Have your openers planned for weigh ins (if that's how your fed does it). Personally, I'd go conservative on your first meet.

Try to get someone to video your attempts. A second person other than Steve could be good, since he'll be busy coaching you.

Biggest thing, have fun! Enjoy the prep and enjoy the competition!

I would make sure to tell the them it is your first meet. At my first meet, I flubbed a bench command to rack as I didn't wait for it, but the judges let it go just the once. I thought that was fair. Speaking of commands, Dave is right - practice them as that is likely the number 1 bench issue. Also practice the pausing and make sure the bar is perfectly still. I got a red light for letting it sink into my chest just after the pause and before the press command.

On squats, depth is the number 1 problem I see. Of late, you have been hitting good depth so hopefully this will not be an issue.

On deads, just pull as if your life depended on it. I have never seen you hitch, which is a problem for some. Also, make sure you do not drop it after lock out.

Lastly, enjoy it and do not put any pressure on yourself. My first meet ended up being one of the best times I have ever had with my whole family.

listen to your coach, pack plenty of food, and most importantly HAVE FUN! Its your first meet and your nerve will get you at times but that's nothing to stress. You will definitely learn a ton so take notes young jedi!

1. If you're the type to get anxious before competition you will likely sleep like crap the night before your meet, so make sure you sleep well two nights before. I've heard it claimed that how you feel on any given day is more a product of the sleep you got two nights ago, rather than the previous night, and in large measure that's been my experience.

2. Pack more food and drink than you think you need, stuff that digests easy.

3. Pack a change of underwear and a second t-shirt, and some Immodium-AD. Better to have and not need than need and not have.

4. Take your first squat to the floor; it may sway a judge in your favor if you cut a 2nd or 3rd a little close.

5. Stay as relaxed as possible in between flights. You only have so much nervous energy to burn in any given day, and you'll need to save some for your third deadlift. In the same vein, don't sniff ammonia before every lift. If you use it (or smelling salts or the like) at all, I'd save it for your final pull, and maybe your second pull. The other lifts are a little too technical - you want to be focused, not out of your skull.

6. Be confident and do your thing. If you aren't naturally confident as an athlete, fake it. Pretend you are, carry yourself like you are, and at some point it'll happen naturally.

Best of luck.

HAVE FUN !!!!!!!

My first one was one of the best times I ever had....I was so nervous leading up to it, but after the first round of applause after my first Squat...all the nervousness went away.....Then it was SUPER FUN.....

IT WAS OVER WAY TOO SOON!!!!!

The iron is there during my times of happiness, sadness and anger. The iron is there available through the 4 seasons and inclement weather. The iron is there to either comfort me or motivate me. The Iron manages to show me how strong I am or how humble I need to be. The iron does not yell, but it always demands respect. The iron is not a disciplinarian, but when disrespected, I feel it for a long time. The iron does not love or hate, but we definitely share a strong bond. And no matter how far I stay away or for how long, the iron is there, waiting to be lifted.
