I find chalk and the quality of deadlift bar makes an enormous difference. I have a pathetic grip, but with some chalk and a Texas deadlifting bar I can do OK.

This doesn't help you I know.

Iain K on here uses a hook grip (as far as I know) and has a deadlift in the 600s. Be good to get his input.

Hook grip. The grip of a mans man

Its low down in you options tbh.

Liquid grip aids will be off help. Not just liquid chalk but there are some none chalk based grip aids that are good. Names escape me.

Mixed grip. Didn't see if you were using it?

Train grip and upper back. Bars holds, thick bar work and lots of hard and heavy upper back work.

Straps are another option. Percetly acceptable tool if you need to.

Hook grip is the grip of gods. However its a pain to get used too and its not great for rep work above 5 say. Plus it's prone to general fatigue and just sore hands. I sometimes deadlift 3 times a week and I just play it by ear if I use a hook or not.

Bottom line is only a few freaks can use a plain old DOH grip deadlifing and use decent poundages across a session. Even with chalk, and a badass knurled bar. If you can your probably a gripfag with a relativley poor deadlift

Hook grip hurts like hell until you kill your nerves in your thumbs.. My hands are a little small for the oly bars but if I had a deadlift bar I could get closer.

It hurts but it can give some good results. Just keep progressing man it'll come.

That's what I was going for. When people think you are just a bit crazy life seems to go by a bit easier...

Love the article, thanks for the link. Luckily I am a bit of a sadist, the pain gets me more pissed off which lets me lift more which gets me more pissed off... you know basic positive feedback cycle. Makes me feel like
