Not really any side effects, as such but some things to watch for and be aware of:

Well, ammonia is poisonous, and I dare say someone out there probably has a genetic vulnerability to its effects. Repeatedly exposing yourself to a toxic substance probably isn't a brilliant idea. For example, I see guys that sniff ammonia before almost every set - even when they are curling.

I think I remember some rather high-falutin' theories about how it works, but my guess is that it just raises levels of arousal. In other words, it raises levels of overall nervous system responsiveness, in the same way as a quick slap would.

After using it a few times, there's probably some classical conditioning. The ammonia does have a physiological effect, but after a while you learn to associate the other cues such as the sight of the bottle, and that alone triiggers increased arousal.

There will be a layer of placebo on top of that - expectation that the magic bottle will do something leads to self-fulfilling prophecy.

I have no evidence for the above, it's just my opinion.

I've used ammonia occasionally and seem to get a mild benefit from it.

Well...may be not for every lift but only on those special occasions like meets, Max days...not just for fun. However, that may be a good homework for someone out there to see if there are any effects...mentally, physically or physiologically...

Go to a pain-shop, get a 250ml-500ml can of 25% ammonia. Empty it and just leave a tiny bit at the bottom, put a lil bit of water with that and sniff the can. Takes some experimentation to get the mix right but you get a lifetime supply for almost nothing haha!

DONT stick your nose into the can straight away, that will be most unpleasant or even dangerous. 20-30cm above the can is enough before getting used to it =)

It triggers the fight or flight response, stimulates the mucous membranes in your head, gets the adrenaline flowing. I use ammonia caps on max effort/close to max effort lifts. I buy them at the local pharmacy which is, luckily, pretty much next door to the gym, 3 bucks for a ten pack. They also have the little bottle. Might have to try that sometime. The conditioned response thing happens for me a little bit. That little *crack* when I bust them gets the juices flowing before I even get it near my nose.

This is something I assume is saved for competition, right?

I can't imagine guys using WS templates hit the ammonia before their ME lifts, do they?

I'm not sure how well this would work for me. I've learned that getting crazy hyped up just throws me off. I'm boring to watch when I lift. I walk up to a new PR attempt as if I'm walking up to a warmup set. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't intrigued though.
