I see one guy is doing a reverse grip bench press, is that normal or common at PL meets?

You dont see it much anymore. Anthony Clark once held the WR bench with that grip. My training partners still use it when shoulder hurts.

Legitmate then, it always makes me sit and think when I see something unusual and then realise "why not", such as with the snatch and the various stances that are permitted but not seen very often etc.

What did surprise me a bit, in the deadlift, was the low barbell due to the small weight plate. For some reason, I just assumed it would be set at a standard height for everybody's lift even if they had to employ a bumper plate for those that weren't using enough of a load to warrant the bigger plates.

Does anyone know if this ^ is normal practice? If so, what load does that go up to, before a person hits plates that are larger/diameter plates are used?

From my experience, unless they are using Kilo plates, most will not get to the normal height unless the bar has 45lb plates on it.

On a side note.
Those large bumper plates are actually an advantage in the deadlift as the bar bends it is able to pick up less weight in sections due to width of plates and bar bend.

So, around 135 lbs and below will generally be smaller plates. I suppose with PL, they're expecting mostly heavier to be lifted but with younger and/or weaker people, I was curious due to the set-up/technique of the lift having to alter slightly to accommodate the height of the barbell; and I recall that Steve tweaked his back, some time ago, when he used the correct height for the first time, after having used various dimensions of plates at home.

I need bumper plates all help is welcome apart from the fact that my barbell doesn't bend, to the best of my knowledge, so that could be a problem anyway.
