Default First Meet this Thursday

This Thursday (4-4-13) is going to by my first powerlift meet. w00t. Pretty stoked about it, but I wanted to ask a couple of questions to the experience folks out there.

1. What helps you mentally prep for a meet?

2. How do you like to eat before a meet?

3. How do you like to train (if you train at all)?

This is referring to about a week before the lifts happen. Very interested in seeing what everyone says.

Personally, I have found it extremely helpful to just stretch and relax. Diet hasn't gone totally FUBAR, but I am allowing a couple of more carbs than normal. As far as mentally prepping, I'm trying to just keep the mind set of this meet is not to lift against other, but only myself.

#1- You are right on. Do not worry at all about what your competitors are doing. Take an ez opener(something you can get on a bad day with the flu), 2nd attempt should be something you are pretty sure you can get, 3rd att should be for a record or at least PR. The competition is between you and the weight. Not against some more experienced lifter. If you win, great, but if you don't, just congratulate the winner.

#2- Just watch your weight to make sure you get in the class you want. Don't overeat. Just eat normal if weight is not a problem. The evening meal before the meat, I try to eat high carbs, taters or pastas. I always drink alot of milk for the calcium and have some e-lyte the night before and day of the meet. E-lyte has sodium, magnesium, and potassium. This along with the calcium will help keep you hydrated and prevent cramps. Make sure you stay hydrated during the meet.

#3- After doing opener check, one week out, I only go to the gym once and do VERY light stuff to keep the blood flowing. You can't get any stronger in the last week, but you can get weaker. Let everything heal up and go into the meet fresh.

Go to the rules meeting before the meet starts.
Remember to wait on the judges commands when you're on the platform.
Good luck!

I would suggest that you read the rules of the federation you're lifting in before the meet. All major feds have their rules online. You don't want any surprises, either in lift preformance or gear and like Bev says, go to the rules meeting to get an idea what the judges are looking for. As far as commands....don't do anything until the head judge tells you to.
