Default Can't judge a lift on video

Just for fun I decided to video a quick 2 rep set of squats to see my depth on video; one at parallel, one deep.

This was due to a buddy saying to me 2 weeks ago that my deep paused squats did not look so deep. His angle was around where the camera is here: about 5' away and looking downward.

The "high" squat was certainly at parallel or thereabouts, and the "low" squat was as deep as i could go. navel was below knees. I'm sure i could get lower with some work on my ankle flexibility, but for the purposes of this test, the squat was plenty deep.

from this perspective, it only looks like i broke parallel by an inch, and the other looks sky high.

Next time, i will try to get the same lift from different angles.

Looks like a good start there! I usually go a little deeper but nice... wish we had the other angles available!

Left looks high, right looks IN by PL standards but not super deep.

exactly my point...the left would pass at a meet (from the perspective of the judge who is viewing at the right angle), and the one of the right is much deeper than parallel.

If your knees are out more at the bottom then perspective matters more.

just keep in mind this view is not a direct side view.

how often do we ever get a video from a meet with the judges perspective? never. it's always from the front looking down, from below, from the side looking down.

Adam Diggers did a video over multiple workouts from various angles about this not too long ago. I will see If I can find it.

The markers on those pics are not in the right places.

However the OP is quite right. You can generally tell if something is very high and you can generally tell if its well in. Then dependent on the angle it gets vague when it gets borderline.

For instance from the front will often be kinder to depth. Certanly when looking from below. Looking from above will be less kind. Looking from an angle to from the rear makes the lift look higher.
