Default IDFPA 2013 National Champs – Write Up

IDFPA 2013 National Champs
Ardee, County Louth
weighed in at 87.6kg (193lbs)

Squat
160Kg Good Lift
165Kg No Lift
165Kg Good Lift

Bench Press
125Kg Good Lift
130Kg No Lift
130Kg Good Lift

Deadlift
205Kg Good Lift
215Kg Good Lift PR
220Kg No Lift

Total
510kgs (1,122lbs)

Goal for the day was to get a 170 squat, 130+ bench and 215 dead for 520kg total so slightly disappointed to miss out on that.

Really happy to have come down into the 90kg (198lb) class, weighing in at 87.6kg meant I lost 14kgs (30lbs) since Jan 1st, and 19kgs (42lbs) since my max weight of 106kg at the beginning of September before I cut for the 100kg class for my last meet. Three hours sleep the night before the meet and a two hour drive wasn’t ideal prep work, taking all that into account I should be happy with the days work, but in typical fashion for me ,im not. Lots of room to improve.
Anyways enough excuses , thoughts for the day
Think it was 16 guys in the 90kg class so lost of competition, we were all in the one flight and as there were huge numbers for the day there were two platforms , that meant the warm up areas were crowed as you had two flights warming up at the same time.

Squats:
Warm up was far too rushed , finished with a beltless 150kg which felt good , opener felt a lot heavier than the +10kgs and struggled a bit, this shook my confidence for the second and wasn’t in the right frame of mind , missed it and was well pissed as this meant I had to stick there and forfeit my 170 attempt. Got the third and moved on,

Bench:
Learned from my mistake of being a bit shy in the warm up area and got stuck in. warm ups went great and opener felt good. Was surprised when I missed the second, am I expected to nail this and have a lash at 135kg to make up for the weaksauce squat , came back and got it….just!

Deadlift:
This went well for me and even though overall I consider it my weakest lift it ended up my best performance of the day, nice smooth opener, PR of 215kg for the second and was in a dilemma for the third , wanted to go for a 227.5kg (500lb) pull , my wife who was doing the vids for me and as I have said before knows more about deads than me – made we watch back the second pull before I chose, again she was right and I went with 220kg – missed that on hitching , but happy with my effort there as I never even attempted more than 215 before

Overall:
Three meet PRs at any weight class - so will take that for now.
Great set up by the orgainsiers and I have to comment on how helpful the judges and spotters were, you wont see it on my vids as I edited it out but after each lift (especially the failed ones) the judge calls me over to help me out or tell me why I failed.

Big thanks to all the people here at MAB for your support and encouragement and a special shout to LtL , Steve and Squatter for the various input they willingly provide in the background , as always a thanks to my wife for making the trip with me and doing all the vids and keeping me grounded when I look like im gonna run away with myself and veer from the planned lifts.

Biggest thing I learned today is to take the second attempts more seriously – think I learned this by the deadlift and it showed.
I also need to learn how to put music over my vids to disguise my shouting like a girl

Great work! I didnt realize you had dropped that much weight! Solid lifts, you will hit much more as your body continues to adjust to the new weight!

You can definitely see the lack of aggression on those seconds. You also seem to suffer from the same affliction as me on deads where your shoulders get infront of the bar and you then struggle to get them back. Overall a very strong showing though plenty of positives to take into your next training block. I'd expect some quick wins as well as you solidify weight and grow into that weightclass a bit more. Well done.

Firstly, I just want to tell you how proud I am of you and say congratz on a really impressive meet Alan. I know it's your competitive spirit talking when you say you weren't entirely happy with it - especially after a squat miss. That happens to me as well. Nobody, including yourself, can ever question your heart, desire, and talent. Proof in the pudding is that you came out after the misses on squat and bench and then nailed it. You also met your weight class goal, which is an accomplishment in itself. Those lifts looked really good mate. Indeed, there is always room for improvement, even for the best lifters out there. I can absolutely guarantee you that you will progress and have bigger numbers for the next meet. You just can't help but get even better. That's what happens to fine lifters like yourself.

I just loved the write up and the vids. Always a treat to see you lift.

PS - we are now at the same total! However, I am much heavier. Your meet here is just further inspiration to me that I can lift just as well, if not better, at a lighter weight.

This is some amazing work Alan ... Very glad to see that you didn't give up after 2nd failed attempt but come back and did it with more determination. It is always difficult to keep your strength with wt. loss but you did it splendidly ... Great work mate ...

Nice job Al. Thought you were aiming for the 82.5 class with that cut ha. Solid work though and great comebacks on the squat and bench.
