I use them on some lifts. Most of my use has been using them in a reverse band set up. I like being able to feel the heavy weight at the top of lifts to get used to it before I am there fully.

I have used them in the more traditional resistance style as well, I find it is a nice change of pace. But, are they necessary? Not in the least.

I like bands for mobility work and some shoulder and arm movements. Face pulls or pullapearts or curls or pushdowns with bands work well. I've used them for GMs and Abs too.

Never done anything with bands and a barbell though. Just as light form or recovery or core work.

Hack away at anything which isn't essential. Do what you love, and do it often. Fazc.

Everything competes for recovery so more assistance is not always the best idea. miked96

Having used both I would say I prefer chains for the instability.
