Default Thinking how to deadlift a different way

Derek Poundstone:

Now I get it! I'm always think get tight, pull back, push through the floor, etc. But at the end of the day, I really never got the idea out of my head that I had to pick the weeight up. That's why I stiff leg it.

From now on, I'm going to think just hold the weight. This makes perfect sense. And yes, the other cues are correct of course, but I was mis-interpretting them.

If you have the same problem I have, maybe this will help you too.

The iron is there during my times of happiness, sadness and anger. The iron is there available through the 4 seasons and inclement weather. The iron is there to either comfort me or motivate me. The Iron manages to show me how strong I am or how humble I need to be. The iron does not yell, but it always demands respect. The iron is not a disciplinarian, but when disrespected, I feel it for a long time. The iron does not love or hate, but we definitely share a strong bond. And no matter how far I stay away or for how long, the iron is there, waiting to be lifted.

Gotta give it a try. I've talked myself into thinking more of "pulling and pushing" for deadlifts over the past year. I think Derek knows what he's talking about...

That's a good cue to use I'm going to have to try that out next time. I've always known to push through the floor but that kind of helps solidify it better.

Not something I consciously think about but yeah, at least for the first part of the movement before the bar reaches your knees it shouldn't straighten much if at all. The legs will push you up, then the bar straightens after.

It helps if you can really get your legs into it.

Good stuff.
