Default The "functional training" crowd.

They seem like a bunch of nazis that piss on anything that's not a basic movement, but then a vast majority of them preach direct exercises for the "core". I just find it interesting that most people can't find a middle ground when it comes to training.

Squats took my vertical leap up by 12 inches and increased my sprint speed by leaps and bounds. Functional win.

That's all I know.

On a serious note though, most things IMO are functional; calf raises (or some such exercise) may be considered for aesthetics only but the added strength permits the muscle to be more functional in normal daily activities because it doesn't or shouldn't tire as easily as an "untrained" muscle.

For me it always comes down to...how is my time best spent? and what is the risk/reward?

Everyone has to answer those questions for themselves. I'm simply not someone who wants to live in the gym. Over the years I've learned just how impactful the basic, compound exercises are.

I'm talking about close-minded individuals that freak out when they see you do a curl, and say we train "sport specific movements" when they're a !@#$ing hockey player. Sport specific training is called practice in that case.

I agree, most things have their use. In powerlifting certainly where you're trying to utilise everything to get the weight up, any weak links will show themselves should you not train them.

Even biceps.

Oh of course, I only do three main lifts when I go to the gym, I make damn sure to do some single joint stuff at the end for longevity purposes too.

Especially biceps! Bench heavy for a long time and forget to do your hammer curls! I get tendinitis when that happens.
