Default Oatmeal

I like to enjoy oatmeal as a breakfast on some days. But a friend told me that the instant stuff I get is not doing anything for me and it would be more beneficial to get other oatmeal. Does it really matter if it is instant or not? I usually get the stuff in the packages that is flavored.

Your friend knows about nutrition? Not that I know that much about oatmeal, but what exactly is the fancy steel cut stuff supposed to do over the instant packaged?

The instant stuff has been rolled out and steamed or pre-cooked so that it will cook faster. Much of the nutritional value is lost, as well as much of the flavor. My preference is steel cut, love the flavor. IF I get rolled oats, the flat flakes, I get Old Fashioned Oats. I cook them for 2 minutes in micro and then let them sit a minute or two. A little longer than it takes with instant, but better taste.

The other major problem/issue with the instant packages is that the flavored ones are high in sugar.

Instant oats are better than say, Capn Crunch, though I love a good bowl of the Capn, just get the unflavored and flavor them up yourself.

My order of preference

Steel cut
Old Fashioned
Instant

Nice work Bam. My girlfriend's dad only does steel cut, but I never knew why until now.

Personally, I take the instant version but unflavoured and add raisins, yoghurt and banana.

"Old Fashioned" for me. Soak 'em for about 5 minutes, micro for 2.5 minutes. Add peanut butter, pad of butter, cinnamon, honey & sliced banana. Yummy! Not sure how healthy it is after adding all that, but it's good and I don't get hungry again until about 3 hours later.

Steel cut has more of a nutty flavor and a heartier texture. Instant oats can get that mushy texture, especially when over cooked. Old fashioned oats have a better texture but do not have the extra flavor you get in the steel cuts.

My old standby flavoring is a packet of stevia and some cinnamon. I try, when I have some, to throw in some raisins to balance out the acidifying aspect of the oats. (Not really, but it makes me sound smart don't it.) I use the raisins cause I like the taste.

I always preferred steel cut. Guess this explains why.
