Default Whole Grains...

I have been reading the even whole grains are not good for you. What are you thoughts?

Not good in what sense?

They can be as high on the GI index as their refined counterparts; they do have more minerals and vitamins in although products (in some countries) have to have added vitamins if they have been made of refined flour etc and therefore have more vitamins than the whole grain versions; they have fibre but sometimes the difference is negligible in relation to the refined counterparts; and, wholegrains can grind down the teeth due to more chewing...


I like a mix of the two, best of both worlds.

I've never felt better in my life since taking them out of my diet! More energy, better recovery, better sleep, etc.....

Do you guys think it is reasonable to gain weight without grains?

I ask this because as soon as I went to a paleo style diet I dropped a lot of weight and found it very difficult to put any weighton. Are grains needed to grow?

I've done "mass gain" on Paleo all cherry season!

Robb Wolf recommends sweet potatoes for mass gain while eating a Paleo diet.

This episode the podcast is with John Welbourn. If I remember correctly they discuss Paleo mass gain.

I personally am not a fan of the over-consumption of grains and grain-based foods.

I will say this...

I would love to do an experiment. I think calories in are key, and would love to see a minimum of 3500-4k for a month on some guys with room to grow.

A good place to start is the documentary Fat Head. While not specifically for lifters, it explains some of the basics of how the modern diet came about.

I don't beat people over the head with Paleo, but I will say that if you are eating enough calories you should be able to gain. Paleo is almost counter-intuitive to the modern diet, so it can be a real challenge for many.
