Default Soy Milk Powder = Cheap Protein Powder

I wanted to put this out there for all guys on a budget because I know protein is expensive as hell these days. I had read a bit about milk powder being a good cheap protein and finally ran into some at bulk barn for something like $7/kg but I wasn't really impressed with the protein:carb ratio.

After the dissapointment from finally finding the milk powder and it not being what I was hoping for I noticed the soy milk powder bin right beside it for $2.90/kg.

1 cup of the soy milk powder has close to the same protein as two scoops of whey. It does have 35g of carb which is quite a bit more than your typical whey protein but it does have a good dose of fiber in there with it.

I bought a little bit of it because it was unflavored and was expecting the worst. I've been mixing in 1/2 cup of the soy milk powder with one scoop of whey protein and a bit of natural peanut butter for my shakes this week and it's really not that bad. I wouldn't call it delicious but it's not bad. The extra fiber is definitely making itself known as well.

Price Breakdown

Allmax Allwhey Protein - 5lbs - $60
http://www.supplementscanada.com/all...tion_5_lb.html
Servings per container = 65
Grams of protein/serving = 25 g

(65 serv/tub * 25 g/serv) / 60 $/tub
= 27 g/$ (0.03704 $/g)

Soy Milk Powder - 1kg - $2.90
http://www.bulkbarn.ca/en-ca/product...lk-powder.html
Servings per kilogram = 10
Grams of protein/serving = 53 g

(10 serv/kg * 53 g/serv) / 2.90 $/kg
= 182 g/$ (0.00547 $/g)

If you don't mind the extra carbs and are able to find a place to buy soy milk powder in bulk its more cost effective than a decent budget whey protein by more than a factor of 5.

What do you guys think of using soy milk/milk powders as a protein powder?

Good post BigAl, but I personally avoid soy like the plague per Lisa, and many others like JJ Virgin. However, for those on a tight budget with no other choice, I guess so be it and they have no choice.

By itself it does not have as good a leucine content as whey but since you are mixing it, it makes up for it. I personally wouldn't use the soy but if you are on a budget and can make it work for you I say kudos.

I have come to believe that soy is of the devil....... it kills puppies and every time you use it an angel loses thier wings.

even at 60 bucks a month whey protien is worth it...... 2 bucks a day versus risking the negative effects of soy ..... so much winning

Thanks for the feedback guys. I did a bit of research last night about soy being good/bad and thanks to the internet there doesn't seem to be any definitive answer. But the potential risks are a tad frightening.

I didn't want to make it a large part of my diet - I was just planning on cutting my whey with it to fit my budget a bit better. Although now that may not be necessary. I was in bulk barn again last night (dammit I love that place) and saw they sell whey protein for $7/lb so I might just finish off the bit of soy that I bought and start buying my whey in bulk.

Do some hunting around. I did some searching and found two or three cheese companies that sell unflavored whey well below the retail (here in the US). The only problem is for many of them you have to buy it 20lbs or more at a time. I am sure you can find unflavored whey cheap with a little searching.

The iron is there during my times of happiness, sadness and anger. The iron is there available through the 4 seasons and inclement weather. The iron is there to either comfort me or motivate me. The Iron manages to show me how strong I am or how humble I need to be. The iron does not yell, but it always demands respect. The iron is not a disciplinarian, but when disrespected, I feel it for a long time. The iron does not love or hate, but we definitely share a strong bond. And no matter how far I stay away or for how long, the iron is there, waiting to be lifted.
