High-protein diet as bad as smoking

Eating too much protein could be as dangerous as smoking for middle-aged people, a scientific study has found.

Research which tracked thousands of adults for nearly 20 years found that people who eat a diet rich in animal protein are four times more likely to die of cancer than someone with a low protein diet.

The risk is nearly as high as the danger of developing cancer by smoking 20 cigarettes each day.

Previous studies have shown a link between cancer and red meat, but it is the first time research has measured the risk of death caused by regularly eating too much protein.

Nutritional advice has been traditionally focused on cutting down on fat, sugar and salt. The World Health Organisation will announce a consultation today suggesting that guidelines on sugar consumption should be lowered, but there have few warnings about excess protein.

Oh come on. What's a man supposed to eat when bulking these days? I hope it's something unnatural in the meat rather than the meat itself? Waiting for the experts....

Don't eat any of this bad stuff but remember guys, starvation is equally bad for long-term health.

This should help clear things up.

were any of these people regularly engaging in physical activity or working out in any way.

No the studies they completed were flawed in multiple ways. There was no physical activity, and it was focused on adults age 50+.

The study also mentioned that a high protein diet for those 65+ is more protective than harmful, so the age range is 50-65 where the "danger" is.

A good breakdown of the study can be found here:

That's interesting in itself, considering the fact that the more we age the more we're considered to be susceptible to illness and the body is considered to be more frail in terms of bones and organs etc.

Thanks for the link :)

Im willing to bet this study was commissioned by a fat bloke trying to make himself feel better by bringing down the meatheads. How can you squat and deadlift hundreds of pounds for reps every week and eat too much protein?

This wasn't a study from what I understand. It was population observation. Also, it doesn't take into account a lot of other things. People who eat a lot of meat tend to do the following:
1. Eat a fair bit of char grilled meat. This is known to increase cancer risk
2. Eat richer food in general. Junk carbs and fats are equally unhealthy
3. Ignores the low cancer rates of the eskimos who live off meat and fat.

Thank you all for posting the extra research. Given me the information I couldn't find.
