Default Potassium Supplementation and Cramps

Anyone know how much potassium I could take in a day to help stave off cramps?

I am staying extremely hydrated.

Caps are potassium gluconate (595mg) but contain only 99 mgs of potassium per.

I was taken pretty much the same thing twice a day and didn't notice much during my last two weeks before show.

I need to do a little more research on this myself. I think the max is 2g of it per day.

BTB, I W/O outside, and cramps were a BIG problem with me a while ago. I also take potassium gluconate with 99 mgs of potassium per, I take 2 when I wake up, and 2 more after my W/O...I very rarely get cramps anymore

From what I hear, potassium is limited to 99mg per capsule by some regulation, ostensibly to protect the stomach lining from too much of this stuff sitting on it in any one location (apparently a perforation hazard). Tragically this limits the capsules to something like 3% of the RDA.

Protein meal-replacement drinks have it in larger quantities, including Myoplex Chocolate (25% RDA) and GNC Lean Muscle Meal (25% RDA). Several other Meal Replacements have significantly smaller amounts of potassium so it's important to read labels.

Do also consider your calcium levels, which are another possible factor in cramping that's not widely recognized. Maybe magnesium also.

Calcium, sodium, potassium, and magnesium control muscle contraction, so if any of those are low, you could run into issues.

Quinine can be hard to get ahold of these days, but its good stuff for cramps, about the best out there.

I would take 2 pils 2 times a day on training days. Half dose on days when not sweating as much.

I also supplement with magnesium gloxonate, put a teaspoon of it in most of my shakea, and I take calcium tablets a couple of time each days aswell.

Cramp free for 3 weeks from the above.

When I do a show I take both potassium and magnesium pills twice a day. I never had a problem with cramping. I don't take them when I'm not competing, sodium and water is enough for cramping in the off season
