Watermelons

I am so hungry for a nice sweet juicy watermelon. However I have bought 2 this summer and they were not sweet. What is the best way to pick a watermelon?

Um...don't know...maybe it just came down to the watermelon itself and nothing to do with ripeness etc.

It's hard to pick a good melon. It's like winning the Lottery when you find one.

A farmer once told me that you want one that has just a small yellowish patch near one of the ends. The yellowish patch is the part of the melon that is sitting on the soil. This is because that leaves most of the melon exposed to the sun, which makes for a better melon. The rest of it should be a darkish green. I have had pretty good luck using this advice. Only had 1 sub standard one last year and so far no crappy ones this year. ( I buy mine at Costco)

Thanks for that tip Squat Man. I will give it a try, I love melons.

Indeed good melons are hard to come by. Good tip squatter.

Here are my tips.

Pineapples, you want one with a short stem.

Potatoes, should smell like dirt, if they smell like potatoes they aren't fresh.
Corn on the cob, I've had better luck with small kernels tasting better over big ones.

Ok so since we are on the subject of watermelons, how do you eat them? Plain, with sugar or with salt? My cousins always ate them with salt and like this it is good. I do not care for them with sugar, I think that the salt enhances the flavor a bit more.

Definitely plain, no other way, to be honest, eating them with something added has never crossed my mind.

I'd assume it's just like picking out a piece of any other fruit. As long as it has a nice vibrant shell, and looks generally healthy (as a person would) you should be good to go.

But wtf do I know...
