Default Lifting Belt

At what point during lifting do you need a belt? Or do you need one at all? I just started working out and was not sure if I should purchase one or not. Thoughts on this?

For a raw beginner, never use a belt, ever. Building a strong core is the benefit of lifting without a belt, and if you start out raw lifting with one, you pretty much blows off a whole lot of "free" core strength training.
