I have a "no estrogen" rule in my home gym. I have to remind my wife and daughters several times a week. No hugs, no talking about pets, no 70s music...

I can see Vince's point

I can live with and without music in the gym. It does nothing for me, other than an occasional distraction. I often lift to ESPN Radio, but that is often more mindless than the music. I have always been good at filtering noise so what ever is playing begins to become white sound for me

Home gym is the ticket, all the metal I want, all the time. I don't offend anyone and I am not offended.

For what it worth, I don't care for "Yo dippity dumbphuck". Main reason I don't have a membership anywhere.

I like Tann's comment a lot: "QUICK, PUT SOME MUSIC BACK ON!! I'M STARTING TO THINK!"

Gave me a laugh but that is exactly the purpose of music for me. Its a distraction from my lifts, the weight on the bar, how many more hard sets I have to complete, how much longer until I'm done, etc. Keeping my mind out of lifting in the time between lifts disconnects me from the lifts. This not only keep nerviousness close to zero when it comes to PR or close to PR attempts, but it also keeps me fresh and mentally capable of continuing to push it.

This may not be "effective" for many lifters, but in my case, its vital. I work up to a weight a few lbs short of a true max one any given lift, 5 days a week and thats the easy part. Past that I'm looking at 6-10 hard ass sets of doubles or triples a stones throw away from the heaviest lift. If I psyh myself up 1-2 times for the daily max... I'm done. Mentally and emotionally drained. Those down sets don't happen, or I'm struggling with a lot less weight.

Now in the short few seconds before a lift, I'll dial it in and block out everything but my lifting cues... but again, 90% of the session is pretty much focused completely on music.

Music specifically... I need something to be playing for the reasons above and to fight boredom. Hard and heavy, or soft and mellow. It doesn't matter as I don't allow the music to directly effect my mood/lifts, it is simply a "mental break." I however cannot STAND hering the same stuff over and over again, and will find myself listening to crap I HATE (in my case, rap) just to avoid getting bored, annoyed, etc.

Music is a distraction for me too. The time between heavy sets can feel like hours sometimes.

I have to listen to music when I work out. Makes the time go by faster and I just enjoy it more.

I think that it is distracting. I do not listen to any music.

I do understand what you're saying. There has to be a happy middle ground there somewhere. The 'I'm starting to think' comment was at a gym where there was no respite from constant ear-bashing. From the moment I got in to the moment I left, there would be pet-food adverts, chart music, previews of upcoming chart music adverts, chart music, Paris Hilton, chart music, Rihanna's favourite chart music, chart music -and so on ad nauseam. I think it makes a huge difference if you're in charge of the music.

This has to be one of the most important aspects concerning music and choice of the individual to listen to it or not; if music is blaring out, earplugs or your own music may not be enough to cover their gym's music. Whereas, if a gym did not supply music, each person can bring their own personal sets along and have the right atmosphere for their workout.

The fitness centre here provides no sound, so each person has to provide their own which is great because it is quiet. The treadmills do have tv channels, radio and such but with headphones I think; I've never really looked but never hear any of them either.
