Core

What is a good way to get my core really strong? Besides doing situps? What exercises are good for core strength?

Heavy compound lifts, weighted situps, cable crunches, side bends.

front squats

I've noticed that side bends, weighted planks (hold between 30 sec-1 minute) and front squatting a couple times a month has helped a lot along with my main lifts.

As has been pointed out recently, the core does not equate solely to the abs, the core is the core...the back, the abs, the entire middle/core section of the body; situps only target a small portion of that core. A good well-rounded workout will target all of it without the need for "specific" exercises, per se, for the core.

I feel the same way. Even moderate resistance on a few core exercises seems to help my squat eccentrics most noticeably. I really struggled with squat eccentrics when I wasn't doing any direct ab strengthening work.

Perhaps now it's mostly mental. I still hold on to them like a binky.

I'm sure there is something in it, I need to get serious about weighted RCS again.

My favourites are;

Decline Crunches
Hanging Raises
Decline Broomstick Twists
Knee Tucks
Side Bends

& my favourite of all are Hyperextensions.

I have done very little direct ab/core work in the past year. I am not ripped in the least, but squatting and deadlifting have given me a solid shield of muscle across my core.

Make sure you are working your back. This will help make your core strong.
