Age is just a number. So what if you will never be Mr Olympia at 70 years old. Just go be the best gosh-darn 70 year old on the planet!

When I was younger, in my 20's and early 30's, I always seemed to have a set strength base no matter what I did. I never really strength trained, but always seemed to keep a certain physique no matter what I did. I managed to stay around a very small, but strong 155ish. I ate like crap, and ate a ton of food, and didnt gain any weight, not that I wanted to at the time.

All this changed beginning at about 38. Every year up to about 44, I saw myself gaining weight, strength declining, and my physiue taking a drastic turn for the worse. First to go, were my leg conditioning, and second the amount of muscle I was carrying. It was an absolutely amazing declining period as compared to my prime period, and how my metabolism changed, and the body become more willing to put on fat mass.

From 38 years old (at 155) to 44 years old, I swelled to 200 lbs, eating just like I had before in my prime period, and without any strength training at that time. Basically, I put on nearly 50 pounds of fat tissue and at the same time, muscle tissue and strength was leaving me. This was one of the first things I studied (my history and what this was telling me), before I began to fix, what I can fix, and what I have control over, and just simply didnt worry about what I didnt have control over, and this was age.

The synopsis above was written to compare to now at 50. You see, I do not set out to be someone elses view of what a champion is; I champion in the things I want, and work on being a champion in the environment of life while working in my diet and fitness goals, and making myself (and others in my life) better around me. When I dropped 45 plus pounds, and worked back to around my (in my prime small weight) of 152 ish pounds, I was carrying more muscle, was stronger, and looked better than I was when I was in my prime years, and this was inbetween ages 44 to 48. Since these ages (44 to 48), I have put on additional 10 plus pounds of lean muscle. Which leads to the present, 168ish weight at 50. In my prime I was never above 155 (I didnt train then regularly, either). Right now as I write this, I am leaner, stronger, carry far more muscle, and look incomparably better as compared to my prime.

Yes, I did not train regularly in my prime, but this is missing the point for those over 40. There are wonderful goal dreams to be accomplished post 40 and, some of these goals and physiques earned by middle aged persons, even put the ones in their prime to the test.

Instead of worrying about feeling older as we get older let's just try to be our best.

Wouldn't worry about it; I'm guessing you're not that old. I'm female which means we have less testosterone and less muscle building potential and I'm still building muscle at 46y/o. in a feminine way >>

I'm 56 and still looking to hit some PR's(as soon as I get this shoulder issue taken care of). I hit a 755 bench at 55 and expect to hit 771 at my next meet. I will admit that it's not all due to muscle gains, but at least some of it is.

I'm just coming up to 50. Don's physique is awesome and an inspiration; Ryano's strength likewise. Both incredible!
