Default Any value in lat pulldowns?

I do pullups but I am helping a friend train and he can't. He's trying to build muscle. Is there any value in lat pulldowns, or if he can't do pullups are power cleans a good replacement?

I'd recommend both lat pulldowns and pullups/chinups - if he can do them in high enough reps to build muslce.

If not, then there's the reasoning behind lat pulldown: not everybody can lift their own bodyweight, at least not right away.

I think Lat Pull downs are fine, even if you can do pull ups there is certainly a place for them. if you cant yet do a full pull up and are trying to build some muscle then they are definitely a good idea as long as good form and full ROM are being used.

Powercleans are a great move, but dont really IMHO mimic or replicate a pull up.

Depends on his goal... pullups are, in my opinion, a much superior exercise. I do both...

Also, just my experience, lat pulldowns didnt increase my pullup strength. Only thing that makes me stronger at pullups is pullups. I focused on them a lot when i was running a crossfit cycle and got to where i coukd crank 15 strict pullups or chinups easy... 21 using some swing... my lat pulldown strength didnt change much...

If he wants to do pullups, and he should, i would reccommend using assistance of some kind to build his strength- bands or partner assisted. Even better is jumping pullups- where you jump into the top position and let yourself down under control.


There's all kinds of ways to progress on pullups even before you can do one strict pulluo. Search some of the guys that do a lot of bodyweight training and theres a ton of information out there.

Both of my sons are on the BIG side. Neither of them could do pull-ups when they started, but they eventually got there. We concentrated on Fat-Man Pull-ups, Assisted Pull-ups, and Rack Pull-ups. Every once in a while we'd throw in some negatives, but not very often because they are very intense.
