Default Barbell curls versus chin ups

Which of these do you think is better for bicep building: barbell curls or chin ups? I don't obsess about biceps but am wondering if I should switch to palms in, closer grip chin ups.

I'm off the opinion that this is really on a case by case basis and there is really no way to say that one is truly better than the other for bicep development.
Of course there are probably opinions arguing for either one, but really, you just need to try it and see what works better for you.

If you can curl your bodyweight; curls. If not then chins

Seriously though if you can get a decent amount of chin ups in a set, say 10, and you're not uber skinny then you'll get more from doing sets of those than from curls.

I would say run one of the exercises for 3 months (or longer until you get bored with it), then run the other one.

I will say this...I wish I would have tried more chin ups when I was a novice.

More and more I am seeing the value of pull ups and chin ups, and would prefer to see a novice develop some strength on these bodyweight exercises. Not saying they should drop curls, but it would be nice if they developed chin ups.

Gironda often advocated pull ups to the sternum (as opposed to chins) as a good one for both back and biceps. And if you outgrow your bodyweight on this lift, you can always do weighted pull-ups.

If you can't do sternum pull-ups for a few reps though, it wont hurt to throw in a couple of sets of barbell curls, following as many reps as you can get over a few sets of pull ups.

This is what Arnold said before Weider's influences came through. In Education of a BBer, he recommends a full two months of serioud bodyweight exercise like chins, dips, push ups etc before someone gets into weight training.

I was up to curling 100 lbs x12x3 on the Reeves classic program and the new Real results push pull, press routine has me doing wgpu's. Ill let you know in a month or so If my arms are getting bigger, shrinking or staying the same.

I know my chins and wgpu's are getting better each time.

My chins and pulls need work. Was thinking of adding curls as an assistance but will probably do 2 sets of pulls to max twice a week and two sets of chins once a week. Will be better than curls in the long run and when I eventually do curls again, they should improve a lot.
