IMO, Chins are your better choice bewtween the two moves. Not just for Bicep growth which they can be great for, but also for the upper back work that they provide.

In the scissor rock paper world of movements, chins beat curls.

As much as I'd like to say Curls... it's Chins (for me at least) without a doubt.

I like this approach as well. Wished gym class way back when would have focused on the simple body weight exercises on a regular basis and not just twice a year for the fitness tests.

I agree too that Chins are far better than either LB/DB curls. One can always add weight using a belt, after reaching a certain number of repetitions to keep progression up to snuff. In addition, one could superset the last chinup set with a set of DB/LB curls at the end with little or no rest.

The bicep is a very simple muscle, and a LOT of people fail to understand this. Honestly, I think which ever exercise you can do with more resistance is the better exercise. However, I don't believe in half-assed chins, so you need to drop to full extention.

I feel that if the squat is the King, then chins belong in the royal court somewhere.

That said I feel that there is a place for loaded supination/pronation so you might just as well add in flexion and extension.

If we're choosing exercises in a vacuum, I'd definitely pick the chins, hands-down. They are awesome for building upper-body and pulling strength. The ONLY circumstance I'd consider curls instead of chins would be if you already have a well-balanced program and need to add a little extra work for your biceps. In every other case, chins.

I don't think it is all about choosing the best lift. It is obvious that the chin-up is superior because it works a lot more than just the biceps and allows a greater weight to be used. But the barbell curl is also an important exercise and has a great benefit to other lifts as an accessory lift. Just like the bench press is a great lift but I wouldn't leave out doing a little extra triceps work, just don't go overboard with it. A little goes a long way.
