That great Benchers are usually poor Deadlifters and vice versa.

I think to be truly great, at competition level, you're right. To get to that level takes a large amount if specialisation.

this is why I am more impressed by people with all round strength if you have lifts of 300/400/500 then you are doing good if you are in the 400/500/600 category then that is just awesome, after that its all gravy...

Id rather be either of those two than say 400/350/350 !!!! (although id take that atm minute too )

Its actually rather hard to find guys who are exceptional all around. I feel like to be exceptional at one exercise, requires genetics that aren't necessarily ideal for another exercise.

I don't think genetics play as great a role as training. Think about the greats like Ed Coan. He was a great all-rounder and pulled over 800lb's both conventional and sumo. Tall guys can squat deep and short guys can pull. It's about what you focus and how you focus it.

Vogelpohl would be another example. His squat is record breaking but taken in isolation all three of his lifts are exceptional.

If I had to specialize one lift, I think it would be deadlift. Don't think I would ever have the willpower to focus on specialization though.

You just contradicted yourself. I am one of those with short arms and a long torso. I have trouble with every pull I make, but having a barrel for a chest with my t-rex like arms allows for teh sweet bench.

Maybe I did contradict myself. It's just that I see the genetics argument used all too often as an excuse. Yes it does make a difference but not as big as many would have us believe.

Oh and I also have alligator arms and a long torso. Pulling sumo will help with that.
