Default Women and Squatting

Let's talk women and squat weight.

What do you feel a dedicated woman might be able to deep squat for 5 to 10 reps after a year of squatting? Average woman.

And what do you think the 10-20% who are naturally strong might be able to deep squat for 5 to 10 reps after only one year of training?

Since I did 45kg (99 lbs) in my very first session, I would say that 60-70kg would be doable after a year for the average woman.

For the Naturally strong, no idea. A fair amount, I would say.

I am no expert on female training. My opinion is solely based on women I interact with.

I think an average woman who squats regularly should be able to do 135 to 155 for reps after a year. "Average" is a crazy term, because a small percentage of women have this dedication to squats, and if they are dedicated, they have rocketing numbers just like men. Only to a smaller degree.

Maybe more.

My wife is 44 and has only squatted about 20 times in her life. She is naturally weak, but enjoys squats. With that said, she never squats more than once a month, so she is far from dedicated.

My wife has a 1RM of 135 ish. (or more)

She can ram out sets of 12 to 20 with 75 to 95 with ease.

One time I put only 75 pounds on the bar and told her to do a 20 rep set just to see what she was capable of doing. She hit 20 reps easy, and asked if she should do it again. She wasn't even winded. I think she could have hit 95 for a 20 repper, or more.

I am fairly confident that if my wife would squat at least 1x a week for 52 weeks that her numbers would skyrocket.

I will add that many women squat in the Smith and call them "squats". Not a condemnation of Smith squats, but I did want to make the point that when we see numbers from a woman that we may need to ask what kind of squats they are.

women tend to be better at higher rep sets regardless of percentage of their max. This is pretty easy to see even amongst elite powerlifters, where I've seen women do sets of 5-8, then add 5lbs and get stapled.

I'm not sure if its a CNS thing, or an endocrine thing, but its what I've observed.
