You use a certain brand, or doesn't it matter much? And how long before your workout do you down it?

I buy bodyfortress, or Sixstar Whey from Wally-world. Sometimes I get the EAS Whey from my other supermarket. I usually drink a serving at work as I'm leaving so lets say about 40 minutes later I'm at home lifting. I've had a serving within about 15 minutes of lifting, and not had any issues.
I think that you want to keep the timeframe to within an hour to say it is pre-work nutrition.

Does the brand matter? I buy the cheapest Whey protein I can find. The label says it has all of the same stuff as the stuff that cost twice as much. Maybe the more expensive stuff works a little better, but I don't really know. I've gone so far as to use the powder as my main protein source over the last several months. I get about 125 grams pr. day from shakes. Two of those are with 1% milk, and a little frozen fruit. The other 3 are just mixed with water. I also eat lots of veggies, and oatmeal. I eat one regular dinner style meal in the early afternoon after my workout. (Sort of)

I work shift work, and get up at 1:30am on work days. I'm at work for a 3:00am show, with a 1:00 pm off time. So, early afternoon is actually a late evening meal to my body. My shift is a 10 hr shift at work. I take oatmeal packets, apples, protein powder, maybe some almonds as a snack. My regular meal is always the leftovers from what I cooked for the family the night before. Every once in a while if I'm really hungary, I'll have a small plate of what I cooked.

On my days off, I try to eat more real food, but still have several shakes during the day.

I use Wally-world Body Fortress too. I'm a cookies and cream fan. I usually drink mine with a banana 60-90 minutes prior to working out. If I'm cutting I just go with protein powder.

I don't really think brand matters. I just look for price and taste.
