Default Young Athlete Training

Hey guys,
I have been presented with a unique opportunity. My neighbor would like me to help out there sports teams by getting these kids into a training program for their off seasons. I wanted to know if guys have any good information I should know about training these kids. They are all 10-12 years of age.

I have a basic idea of what I want to do with the athletes, but I thought I would throw it up here anyways.

Thanks guys!

thats awesome jwood..what kind of equipment do you have if any? i used to do strength training over the summer for junior football leagues..main thing that people do is skip over the basics and try to make things fancy and cool..get the basics going first.

thanks for the tips guys, the basics will definitely be essential. I plan on doing mostly body weight stuff, push ups, pull ups, lunges. Stuff like that.

I will be doing this at my house, so I have a bench, barbell, adjustable dumbbells, and a pull up bar.

I am not sure about all of them, most of them play football and baseball, some also play basketball also just for fun. They are looking to start training over the winter to get ready for baseball and then train again in the summer time to get in shape for football.

I think at least for most of them, football is their main sport.

well for baseball coordination and fore arm strenght are important i didnt play it but i kno our coach at school would make em to towel workouts and lots of batting practice.

For football u need for them to work their posterior chain our coach would make us do RDLs GHR's and squats(in high school) then for linebackers which was the position i play we had a ladder for footwork and sled which we would pull while back pedaling then quickly change position and run full speed. The we would another one like at the combine were u back pedal as fast as u can and then quickly run forward and try to catch a pass while running towards the passer. and also we had a tackling sled which we had to push like 100 feet. Also teach corner backs to always stay low while backpedaling and looking forward at their man, not at the quarterback until they change direction.

Always do proper warmups, high knees, butt kickers, butt kickers + high knees, lunges, cherry pickers 50 jumping jacks, and 3 50 yd sprints, thats what we did for warmups

jwood im sure you will come up with something awesome. main objective is to just improve all around athleticism. They are still young so you really don't need to focus too much on sport specific because i'm sure they all play multiple sports. Bodyweight is a good starting point. One thing i will tell you from experience..you may have parents who are going to be asking you a ton of questions about strength training, especially when it comes with weight. A lot parents still believe that weight training will stunt their child's growth, and that it's dangerous, and so on..just be prepared to be able to answer any of those questions if they do come up. you best be getting paid for this too brother!

I will be negotiating payments once I come up with a basic program. The parents would like to see some sort of plan before this all goes into motion.

What would be a good asking rate? I will probably be doing 3 one hour sessions a week. Maybe less

Congrats Jwood.

I was trying to think how I would train my daughter and keep it fun and interesting. I would probably throw in some challenges and small goals, like making a goal of hitting X amount of pushups, or situps in a minute during. I might also add in some fun yet challenging exercises like burpees, and possible some small circuits like a sprint for 40m, 10 burpees, a sprint for 40 m, 10 situps.

I don't have a clue about proper training for this age. But my daughter does like "Ninja Warrior", so I know anything fun and challenging will be exciting for her.
