Default Switching workouts every 8-12 weeks

Does anyone know where the idea start that you must switch workouts every 8 to 12 weeks came from?

I've never really switched a workout. I've made small changes over the years, but it's not like I'm jumping from DC training to whatever 7 times a year.

I have a buddy who is obsessed with switching workouts all the time and he is constantly cracking on me for not changing.

I think it is often wrongly believed that you MUST switch every 8 to 12 weeks or you WILL stall. This is not the same as making intelligent changes when a real stall occurs.

I think the OCD belief is that "change" drives progress, and that if change is not consistent, progress will stall.

I don't believe it making change for the sake of making change, especially if you are making great gains. I prefer a more evolutionary approach to training changes - make changes when they are needed.

Just my 2 cents. Mileage may vary.

I agree with BTB. If something works why would you change? You should monitor your progression and make a choice from that data. Imo changing too much will decrease performance.
