doesn't have to be. you could do straight sets or ramp up to a top set of 5

example:

95x5
115x5
135x5
155x5
175x5

95x5

175x5
175x5
175x5

The odd thing about 5x5's is that most of them aren't 5 working sets The newer ones generally are.

You can really go with whichever method you like best.

On the 5x5, I think they are a great way tro add muscle and strength. I believe if you eat right, you will add quite a bit of muscle mass with the 5x5 approach.
I'll chime in here I think... I can't agree with BTB more on this. I've been using a 3 to 5 sets of 5 approach for the last couple of months and I have gained inches in my legs, chest and arms while shrinking my waist so this definitely works!!! Lifts like preacher curls and pressdowns are good when you're at the point that you need to "sculpt your guns" for competition or something like that. I wouldn't say don't ever do them until then, just limit them and focus more big compound movements. In the case of arms, BB curls and extensions will be your friend.

I would recommend adding weight to the bar with each set!
