Default BMI bodybuilder: eat less, move more

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti..._campaign=1490

Super fit personal trainer and champion bodybuilder told she's OBESE by bungling NHS nurse who claimed her BMI was too high and told her to 'eat less move more'.
  • Anita Albrecht from London told she was obese and to start drastic diet
  • But nurse did not take into account muscle weighs more than fat
  • The 39-year-old weighs around 9st 10 when competing
  • The personal trainer placed sixth in Miss Galaxy Universe in 2012
  • Already follows strict diet and consumes just 1,800 calories
  • Now warning athletes about misleading nature of body mass index

It's about time nurses (and docs) were at least taught not to just go by the reading alone, if they're not going to use any other measurements (caliper readings etc), they should at least be able to ascertain by looking and using common sense to know that the BMI does not relay what they are seeing in the person that is stood in front of them.

If they have lean muscles, low(er) fat, both of those would clearly show the BMI to be inaccurate; all they need do is use common sense instead of blindly accepting the figures on a chart they have before them.

Bring back critical thinking and common sense.

I still don't understand why a constantly advancing field like medicine is still clinging to a chart that predates the American Civil War.

According to the scientist who came up with the idea of BMI, it is not applicable fir individuals whose waist is less than 55% of their height. This automatically excludes natural bodybuilders from the BMI.

The nurse not only lacked common sense but evidently was ignorant if the medical literature. Same goes for the doctors who spout this crap.

Glad to hear about that waist:height ratio exception, otherwise I'd be considered "overweight" and quite close to "obese".

Phew. Good to know I'm acceptable - would've been worried otherwise!
