Default Best cardio routine?

I started to find out about minimal intensity cardio, substantial intensity interval training and I started out to use a variety of cardio machines available at the gym.
What is your best cardio routine ?

The only one I use, based on the fact that moving the body along a vertical and horizontal plane has more impact, is a basic aerobic step...which I use to do random intervals on, no set timed interval stuff here, just changing pace throughout as I see fit; it does take a lot of self-discipline because it would be all too easy to have a longer "rest" period than required which would then make it less optimal but I push the envelope, so it works. In addition, every single cardio session is slightly different that way as well, so the body has no idea what to expect, to some degree.

Have used the same cardio set-up for years but started out as a normal LIT and SS style cardio session and evolved to the above after doing research.

Hill Sprints. They work for me. I am a heavier guy and I have never had any knee, back or ankle problems doing these. I have 2 hills I use, a longer(80 yards-ish) one and a shorter one(40 yards-ish) so I am able to vary distance, keeping it fresh. You can also vrry rest inervals and goals.
For example, I want to clean out my lungs (make them hurt) and almost puke, i run up the long hill as many times as I can, at the shortest intervals I can (which in all reality usually aren't that short.)
I want to work on explosiveness, I use the short hill, with set intervals, until I start to slow down. This approach is similar to how you would treat a lift in the weight room.

Another positive benefit of Hill Sprints is that they actually "work the legs" (for lack of a better term) in a manner that strengthens them.

Oh yeah, and that too. Very much that. Most of all when done with squats, I find.

The iron is there during my times of happiness, sadness and anger. The iron is there available through the 4 seasons and inclement weather. The iron is there to either comfort me or motivate me. The Iron manages to show me how strong I am or how humble I need to be. The iron does not yell, but it always demands respect. The iron is not a disciplinarian, but when disrespected, I feel it for a long time. The iron does not love or hate, but we definitely share a strong bond. And no matter how far I stay away or for how long, the iron is there, waiting to be lifted.
