I tend to agree with grim and MAB here, I used to do a lot of back width exercises but now have almost completely stopped due to training for powerlifting. I deadlift a lot and I believe that it has improved the width and definitely the thickness of the back.

I think that back exercises will work width and thickness and the only "width" exercise I do are pull ups but I think they will also help the thickness of your back. I like compound exercises where you get the most bang for your buck.

In the past I followed the idea of chins for width, and deads, and rows for thickness. I'm not of the opinion any longer that it is so.

They all hit the back in there own way, and can be useful, but as per my latest plans it is about power, and simplicity.

Bent rows, and deads are my two main back moves, with rows really getting a lot of attention. On Dave Draper's site, he has an article about bent rowing that sealed the deal for me. I'm working on my rows, and will have them competing with my bench.

I'm at 155 for my rows currently. I want that number to be 2, something.

This guy keeps laughing at me.

That is such a wickedly thick back. You just don't see lats like that on naturals.

I wish I had more experience with pullups, but I've just never cared for them. I think if all you ever did was rows, deadlifts and pullups, there wouldn't be a width or thickness issue.

When did the idea of training for back width and back thickness start? I really don't understand how pullups make your back wider. Don't big delts make your back look wider?

I work them both anywho.
deadlifts + two 'width movements + two 'thickness' movements = lets me sleep at night

Figuratively speaking he will. Crom would never really smile smile.

Deadlifts will make your back BLOW UP, width and thinkness! Also i try working on back width and the exercises that work best for me are one arm DB rows, wide grip pull-ups (weighted if you can), or wide grip pull down.

Just took a new pic for this avator on this site and i tried a new pose and my lats look pretty good in the pic..
