Default Why bodybuilders don't talk about...

So i was watching Phill Heaths road to Olympia the other day, and along with many other documentary/films like that i've noticed that absolutely no one talks or even mentions steroids?... They all obviously talk about how important nutrition is about getting that big lalalala, but never ever talk about the S word.

Obviously it's touchy subject, but why is it so completely shrouded in secrecy, was curious to see what YOU think.

Shaney.

In the US it is a felony. Although obviously they are using, I am sure they dont want to throw it in the law enforcments faces.

Like JB said, illegal. Plus, when you're high profile you'd get 2200 emails a day asking for help.

Fight Club rules apply. There are no steroids.

1st RULE: You do not talk about STEROIDS
.
2nd RULE: You DO NOT talk about STEROIDS.

3rd RULE: If someone says "source", or speculates that lifter X is using steroids, the thread is over.

If they talk about it, even if they don't get investigated by some federal unit, whether police or customs or whatever, they'll lose endorsements.

Check out the documentary Bigger, Stronger, Faster. It's a very even-handed treatment of the subject. And one of the guys who spoke openly about his drug use later lost his job advertising supplements.

What it comes down to is that physical training can change how you look, how you feel (health), and how you perform (sports, everyday life, etc). When you start training, whatever crazy-arsed programme or diet you follow, all three come up at once from poor to okay. If you want one of the three to be good, then you can do that, but you need to spend more time on it, and you need the right programme and diet. If you've the right background you might get two of the three to good. This was the old way of bodybuilding, where points were awarded for performance in a sport - both looks and performance were good.

But if you want one of the three to be excellent, then you have to sacrifice one of the others, it drops down to poor. Athletes accrue injuries, their performance is excellent but their health is poor. Models and bodybuilders have plastic surgery, disordered eating, drugs and so on. They look excellent, but their health is poor. Bodybuilding took sports out of it, so their looks could go from good to excellent - but their performance and health both dropped.

Even if the drugs had never been invented, we'd still have the same sort of thing. Dieting down until you can see the striations in your muscles isn't good for you, believe it or not.

IMHO, no top notch BB and PL would admit this. Besides the useful posts here, there is one more reason, and it is people's perception.

General population is of the view that roids are magic and anyone who takes it can grow, so it is nothing special if I have 21" biceps using roids. So the perception stays in anybody's mind, its damn easy to grow with roids and BBs using roids are not special.

What they tend to forget is that to be a top notch BB is a herculean task, and just like any other field it requires consistent hard work and dedication of years and sometimes decades even if you are on roids. It seems very easy for general population to say, "ha, he uses roids, so nothing special about him". As a successful BB, i would not like to hear that for sure.
