Cheap equipment

I am just starting to lift and have not found a gym yet to work out in that I really like. What is some good equipment for me to invest in that would not break the bank?

A barbell
Adjustable dumbbells
A selection of plates (you can buy two at a time every month or so and slowly build them up)

Or find a cheap Craigslist deal etc.

Craigslist, yard sales and Play it again Sports are all good sources. If you live in an area near a military base, start watching when orders go out. I have not paid retail for any of my equipment.

+1 on craigslist. Barbell with 100 pounds or so, and build from there as mentioned.

You could also try ebay. I know you dont want to spend a lot on shipping but sometimes you can arrange to pick them up.

Garage sales. I found a great set of dumbells last year and they were very cheap. They looked like they had hardly been used.
