I think you're making a good choice. I believe too many trainees try to separate strength gains from muscle gains. If you're looking at practicing a martial art, strength will help, and will lead to more muscle. I would recommend not doing too many low-rep (1,2,3) sets, but instead, using moderate rep sets and trying to increase strength on those.
Studies have show that pretty much any rep range works for strength gains but low reps are the most dangerous. I recommend sticking between 5-15 reps.
I am a 58 year old healthy male. I lifted free weights in my 20's for about 2 years. At this stage of my life, and because I want to start training in the martial art called systema, I decided to restart my free weight training as a beginning powerlifter before I segue into bodybuilding. I am doing my training in this order because I want to gain as much power and speed as quickly as I can. Can anyone inform me if I have chosen the correct path training-wise? Thank You.
