Hey everybody

I'm pretty much new to the whole lifting thing. I've done it in the past but overtraining has led me to quit too many times. I'm really looking forward to changing that, this time around. Any good advice is appreciated. Lots of respect to the lifting community,

Adram

Just some basic advice is to remain consistent. You will never see results without consistency. As far as overtraining that is very hard to do. Overtraining is to the point of weeks of fried muscles, CNS, immune system, etc.... Muscle soreness for a few days to the point of a sore bottom for 5 days after squats is overreaching a little sometimes but not overtraining. Eat, Sleep, and Train be consistent with those and you can acheive your goals.

Look on the site there is a lot of beginner programs designed already and ask questions many knowledgeable people on site.

Post up your goals, height, weight, age and maybe we can point you in the direction your looking for.

Welcome to the forum!

1) Find a proven and sensible routine that focusses on the basic lifts, not one full of everything you can think of throwing into the mix.

2) If you are fat, eat less, move more and lose weight before you begin heavy lifting. If you are skinny, eat enough food to slowly gain a little weight every week and focus on getting stronger in 5 or 6 BIG lifts.

3) Make sure you are getting 7-9 hours of good sleep every night, you heal and grow during sleep more than any other time of the day.

4) Keep yourself in good condition and health. You will gain easier and progress longer if you eat a healthy diet and do some conditioning work at least a couple of times a week. A couple of days of fast walking, sprinting, playing sports, and just generally breathing hard and sweating will be enough for general fitness.

Welcome aboard...one question. I think what you mean is boredom, not over training. Some people needs that little extra push to stayed focus and motivated. Look for something that you like and put small goals in the middle of the road. Don't try to lift the whole gym in one day and keep it focus. We are here to help. The forum has a lot of lifters, powerlifters, crossfiter, and more with excellent ideas and suggestions. Welcome again!
