A little about Body Fat for the beginner.

Calories in Fat vs. Muscle
One pound of body fat equals 3,500 calories. That is about six times the calories in one pound of muscle. Fat can be carried by the body easier to supply energy whenever you might need it, but getting rid of a pound of fat vs. a pound of muscle requires much greater energy expenditure.

Burn Fat, Not Muscle
An individual looking to rid him or herself of a pound of fat needs to burn 3,500 calories more than he/she consumes. To lose one pound of fat and not lose lean tissue (muscle), you must have a delicate balance in your diet and exercise regimen.
1 lb is about the size of a coffee cup.

I'll add to this:

A muscle cell is comprised of 75% water while a fat cell is comprised of only 10% water.

Even though I've already seen this picture 100 times or more, it never ceases to gross me out. For a guy that doesn't have a weak stomach, that's saying something.

Yep, and with muscle being much more denser. This is why the same size/cubic inch amount of fat vrs muscle, the muscle is much heavier.

Hear is a very good read to learn more for people.

Imagine how much internal organ fat looks like when you're a chub like me.

I am a chub like you. I'm not far behind you at 245, I've definitely gained fat since the beginning of the summer. Teh shame...

That's going to change very soon here. Like I said before, I've got some big plans this weekend.

Shadowschmadow 10-21-2011 10:49 AM

I lol'd.

At least we admit it. There's nothing worse than a fat person in denial.

BendtheBar 10-21-2011 10:52 AM

I am a happy chub.

As well you should be. You got to eat a donut this morning. :)
