I also used to to do them with leg presses and thought it worked well.
Both great options if you ask me.

I think, first, I'll try the smith machine and the low step, if no-one is using the solitary machine they have (very small gym).
They also have a step/stair/mountain climber?? style machine. I queried whether that would work and if both legs are done together, it seems to give a good deal of resistance when set on harder levels...so, that's another option.
Having a variety of options is great because if a few of the machines/stations are taken up it still leaves me with choices. And, hopefully, this thread may benefit others too.
