Alwyn Cosgrove's said this,

"A good program performed poorly is worthless. A shitty program done with a ton of effort is worth a lot. But when you get a good program and a ton of effort, the results can be amazing."

Wow, that is deep!

I think the part about the good program performed like crap is a problem with most younger trainees. They try something too fancy before they learn their own body, and the lifts.

I wish I had someone instructing me the first two years. I had a mentor, and he was a great guy, but this was 1986 and he came from the Arnold era and mindset. He would have me perform 6 sets per exercise with different rep schemes.

Of course, it worked. Because I was shooting for progression. Most everything works the first 6 months under that lens.

But I could have saved myself 30 minutes in the gym every day, and some long term body wear.

I definitely agree, I always walk around my gym preaching to younger kids about compound lifts. When they ask me how to get bigger arms I tell them bench, squat, deadlift, and you will get huge. Eat big, and train big, with compounds. It took me some time to figure it out, but when I did it was amazing.
