Exclamation How to recover from a caffeine overdose?

Hey there,

I'd like to start off by saying I never thought I'd be in a situation like this. I've been in hospital for 3 days from an extreme caffeine overdose. I don't want to delve into details but my situation was CRITICAL. I'm lucky to be alive. This was not gym related.

I'm currently 110kg at 6'2'', 19 years old. I'm relatively lean. I'd like some help with recovery and to know how soon I can go back to hitting the weights or doing some light cardio like walking. I've thrown up a lot. My stomach lining isn't too good right now.

I've heard about muscle memory before. I'm wondering if I will gain my muscle/ size back after (probably atleast) 2 weeks off from the gym and my usual calorie surplus of 500 (3500 a day). Right now I can only eat very little. I'd also like an estimation of how much weight I'll lose during this time. Of course, I'm just grateful to still be breathing right now.

ANY HELP VERY MUCH APPRECIATED

It's good to hear that last statement, about still breathing, because that's the focus right now. I know where you're coming from. If I was in a car accident and my leg got snapped in half my first thought would probably be "how long will it take me to squat again?", but the truth is that isn't important right now. Yes, you'll get your strength and muscle back. You won't have to start from scratch all over again. But you'll only do it once your body has recovered. Recovery from exercise and recovery from sickness aren't separate things. Your body is using energy to recover from whatever it's going through, and right now you need to let all of your energy go into healing and recovering so that you'll be able to avoid any long term issues.

Honestly, I'm surprised more people your age don't have issues like this. Most teenagers are in a constant state of not being hydrated enough while consuming massive amounts of stimulants. I love a Monster every now and then, but some kids are pounding them like they should be pounding water.

Ok, I'll get off my soapbox now. Just rest assured that you'll be able to get back to it soon, and focusing on your recovery without worrying about lifting will actually help you hit the weights sooner and with more success.

Keep us updated on how it goes.

Absolutely agree with Soldier.

Concentrate on recovering your health and don't worry about the gym. At 19 years old, you have decades of gains ahead of you, so whether it's one week to recover from your incident or six months will just be a little blip in your overall progress.

If you have just survived a major life-threatening event, then 'when can I start training again?' is really a question to direct to a medical professional, not to a bunch of gym-users on the internet (with the greatest respect to my esteemed colleagues ) So ask your doctor (or the hospital) and abide by his/her/their advice.

Muscle memory is a real phenomenon and you will get your gains back quicker than first time round.

The gym will always be there, get yourself sound first and when the Dr. Says you can get back in the gym. And far as caffine you may want always check your supplements and make wiser decisions and keep us posted.
