Default Protein Substitute

Hey guys

My mass gainer finished and I don't have money to buy another at the moment... I was wondering whether I could make my own protein shake? Or if I could just take a certain amount of eggs in throughout the day or after my workout?

If you want a poor mans "mass gainer", try some white rice and ground beef or chicken. Will be MUCH better than any supplement. Of course the eggs are great too. Oh, and potatoes are usually pretty cheap as well.

Whole bone-in chickens and chicken thighs are cheap. Cook them up in bunches and munch away. Ground beef is usually pretty cheap as well, especially since you want to bulk, so get the stuff with more fat. It's cheaper and more caloricly dense, which are both good things.

Mass gainers are expensive and usually choc full of crap. Maltodextrin should not make up that large a percentage of your intake. Learn to love chicken, beef, rice, potatoes, and my new personal favorite, sweet potatoes. If you want more calories, toss in all the olive oil, cheese, butter, peanut butter, and heavy cream you want. You'll be surprised at how many more calories you can add in with these fat-heavy additions, and it's hard to find any foods that don't go well with at least one of them.

Yes, whey protein is much better. Most gainers are simply Maltodextrin and whey protein. The protein is fine. It's simply a milk byproduct. But Maltodextrin is a simple carbohydrate. You might as well be drinking a protein shake while eating a large bag of M&M's or snickers.

Here's a good Q and A on the subject-

I'm with Soldier on this one in that Mass gainers are powdered snake oil/ doo doo, and that you instead should go toward the more traditional meat and potatoes diet.

Ice- whatever happened to your joint situation?

Eggs. Meat. And yeah, some carbs (oats, rice, potatoes, pasta, whatever).

Whole milk is a great "mass gainer" all by itself.

Or there's pizza - that's a hell of a mass gainer! It's got everything.

edit: Nothing wrong with topping up w/ some whey protein as well though.

I have to agree as well. Plenty of whole foods that are far superior for mass gain. And as the others said, fill in the protein gaps with whey.
