Default Hernia Experience?

First, I know everyone is going to mention getting checked out by a doctor, but no worries, I have that appt scheduled for 2:15 pm today.

I just want to know if anyone has any experience dealing with a hernia. There is a pretty good possibility that I have one, and I am just frustrated to all hell with the possibility.

If I do, surgery is most likely going to be my main option due to the type (femoral), so I just wanted to hear if anyone has gone through the surgery or dealt with one in training and how it affected you?

The worst part about it all is that it doesn't cause any pain at all, training or not, but the risks are high enough with one it seems that it is best to get it taken care of.

Thanks for any info, I know it isn't the easiest thing to just come out and talk about compared to other injuries.

Training partner had one around the belly button. Had to have a surgical mesh put in. Was down for a few weeks then was back lifting slowly. Tied a gym PR in the deadlift like 4 months after surgery, and his training lacks a lot lol.

Hahaha, thanks JB I appreciate the info!

Yeah, my biggest worry about this all is having the surgery and it putting an end to what I want to achieve within powerlifting.

If it came to the road obviously I would choose quality of life over achieving a goal in powerlifting, but it would be a hard choice to make no matter what. It won't stop me from training anyways, but I don't want this to end up keeping me away from lifting heavy things all the time

You will make it back fine, common injury in powerlifting. Get it fixed, take your time, you will be good to go.

Have had one repaired. JByrd's advise is spot on. Take the time to let it heal properly and then start back lighter than normal. work back to full strength. If they fix with mesh you only want to do it once, re-injuring, and the subsequent repair, is messy, so be patient. The iron will still be there.

yep , JB has you covered , had one years ago and also had to have a surgical mesh put in , not a pleasant experience , but I do have a manly looking scar from it

Thanks guys, good to hear all the success stories

I will definitely be following everyone's advice if this is the culprit, and I'll most likely be posting for help and tips along the way.

It is nice to see that others have gone through it and are back and competing still.

When he had his, I asked around for him. I found that a lot of people had issues on the bench first due to arching. We made him wear a bench belt (much smaller) doing any movement that might effect the core for the first 2 months.

Well the good news is that I don't have a hernia!!

The bad news is they have no idea what this bulge is, so I have to go through a bunch of tests to figure it out.
