Default Health Insurance and BMI

Coming to an employer near you.

My wife weighs 151 pounds and was told that she is 5 pounds away from being morbidly obese and is at risk for losing her health insurance.

Looks like this is the wave if the future; a method of jacking your costs and making you the villain.

If the standards were reasonable I could tolerate this, but my wife is in great health and is not morbidly obese.

That's insane! She's not even close to morbidly obese!

Wow, that really sucks.

That's the advantage of a National Health Service like ours, I guess. No clumsy measures that effectively discriminate against anyone who is remotely robust in build.

Having said that, they are starting with the same sort of thing in the UK for life insurance. We haven't renewed one set of insurance because the premium is so high based on our weights: Mrs T is too light and I'm too heavy.

Sadly I understand where they are coming from in doing this but they are going about it wrong. I see a lot of people who suck money out of the insurance pool. Why should I have to pay more for the noncompliant diabetic w/ COPD(emphazema) who continues to smoke and visits the hospital once a month. They should be looking at fitness but you can't force people to work out so they go off of how skinny you are

At 147lbs, myself, I don't see how she can be morbidly obese, there's just no way.

What chart are they using?

This is just crazy. She is no where near close to being obese. It is insane that they consider that to be obese, and that she is not healthy. I have heard of other companies doing tests to see how healthy a person is and then basing the scale of what they pay off that. I do not feel it should be based on weight though.

So, my question is, to whom do we have to petition to have BMI not one of the considerations for medical health? Since it doesn't take muscle mass into account, it is completely faulty.

One of the little known facts about BMI (from those who formulated it) - it should not be used if the waist to height ratio < 0.5. Also, if I am not mistaken, the BMI concept was originally said to be applicable only to sedentary individuals, since thats the sort of individuals who were the subject of that "study".

Somehow, folks who just want a formula to spit out a so called healthy number seem to ignore it.

Clearly your wife is not overweight. It is just the insurance companies being dicks so they do not have to pay out as much or cover a person.
