Cool Anyone Else HATE Collars?

Thirty years ago, I was doing 20 Rep Squats in my Gym.

For once I was making great gains.

10 more Pounds was going on the Bar every week.

I was beginning to think that I might get to the Magical Weight of 405 X 20 Before I hit a Plateau...

And why, O my Friends, is 405 Pounds a "Magic Weight"?

Because it is an Olympic Bar with 4 45 Pound Plates on either side.

Then I came into the Gym one day, and some Evil Force had messed with my Good Vibes by the most effective subtle means immaginable.

There was a Big Sign saying:

"Collars Must Be Used At All Times When Squatting".

"What is that about?" I asked my Coach—who was half-owner.

"I don't know—Some Wild-Hair that Bud got stuck in his Craw."

Damn, Damn, Tripple Damn!!!

Obviously, from the Phrasing, my Coach didn't feel strongly about the Rule...

But neither was he going to countermand his Partner and get in a Hissing Contest over something he felt was of no Importance...

Now obviously, at some point—as the weight grows great enough to seriously bend the bar, collars become Prudent—and a bit later, Essential.

In the Squat, 405 Ain't it.

495 Ain't it.

Depending on one's style585 may not quite be "It".

I have Never seen someone fail at a Squat in the Gym in such a way that the Bar tips precipitously enough to one side to Dump Plates...

Or to be Prevented from such an action by a Collar.

Certainly, it is Possible—And I will gladly Accept the Risk, whatever it may be, given the freedom to choose.

Collared Plates don't tinkle Merrily and "Sing" to me.

The Thrice-Damned contraptions change the Harmonics and Feel of the Weight...

And I HATE them.

My dislike of Collars grows every time I think about them—for Squats...

They are quite handy when deadlifting—particularly for reps...

In fact, my Loathing for Collared Squats has grown to the place, that in a Gym that didn't Require them...

My own self-imposed Weight Threshold for when I would Voluntarily use them has gone up about 180 Pounds—Just Because.

I HATE Collars.

Anyone else?

Nope, I have no issues with collars; if I'm doing Oly style, at home, the barbell has no spinning compartments at all, so I just place the collars a smidgen away from the plates, hey presto! clanking and spinning away...simple!

I am anal about collars. I use spring locks on everything. Seen too many people lean and dump on tough lifts.

So I am the anti-you. I would never take the risk of a collar-less bar.

My gym never had those Spring Collars.

I think If I ever went back there, I'd stick a pair in my Gym Bag for my own Use.

At least that wouldn't mar the 225; 315; 405, 595 and 685 Progression that seems so Important in my Mind—since they weigh next to nothing, while regular collars add 5 Pounds per side.

{365–3 45's and a 25 on each side and 455 Are also important Landmarks to many...}

{I go over Past and either Predicted or Hoped for Poundages and Reps all day long, almost every day...

Not to the exclusion of other thingsbut it continually reoccurs throughout the day.}

I was just curious how many were forced—by Gym Rules—to use Collars Against their Will and Better Judgement...

Many Folks tell me that I'm Probably a High Functioning Asperger—or at least have many of the Characteristics—and things like a New Collar Rule at the Gym still make me mad enough to grind my teeth in rage, 30 some-odd years later...

Actually, I went by that Gym's Website—wanting to relive some Good Ole Days—and that Same Hated Sign was Prominently featured in a Couple Album Photos...

Getting my Flashbacks in full-drive once more over a long-ago Perceived Injustice.

I like em ( except on solo bench efforts) I have actually had weight slip during a squat andthe collars probably saved me from major injury.

If I put a plate on the bar, I hold it on with a collar. Sorry bro.

I also use additional collars to hold my chains, so I often use 4 collars on a single bar.

While I always use collars on my money sets (cant be bothered with most warm ups) I've seen many, not all, Oly lifters not use collars. Wonder why?
