Have you read 'The twilight of atheism' by Alistair McGrath? I read it a couple of years ago. It's very interesting, tracing the history of conflict between science and religion, or rather the perception of that conflict.

Speaking of science and religion, I just finished 'The nun' by Denis Diderot (1760 ish). Diderot was one of the key figures of the enlightenment, and responsible for the first encyclopaedia. The nun is a kind of expose on the cruel practices within, er, nunneries, where women without marriage prospects were effectively interned.

However, the really odd thing about the book is that it began as a joke. Diderot and his friends were very upset that one of their circle, a marquis, had decided to retire to the country. To get him to retuen to Paris, Diderot and a friend started writing letters to him that were supposedly from a nun who had escaped from her cloisters and was looking for help. The marquis was eager to help, and he arranged to take her on as a nanny. Then the whole stunt got out of hand, as the marquis was starting to redecorate rooms for her arrival, and change his domestic arrangements and so on. Diderot was forced to kill his nun off with a short illness.

Eventually Diderot revealed the plot, took all of the letters and turned them into a novel.

Good book? I have an acupuncture book but can't remember the title, it's upstairs in a pile of books that need sorting.
